Meditation + Talk: 5 Reasons Why You Are Working Hard and Going Nowhere
October 19, 2024

Feeling stuck, spinning your wheels, or struggling to get started on something important? You’re not alone.

In this talk, Dr. Diana Hill dives into five key psychological barriers that keep us from moving forward. Whether it’s working hard but getting nowhere or feeling immobilized before you even begin, we all face challenges that can keep us stuck in old patterns. We often think there’s a “right” way to do things, whether it’s writing a book, being in a relationship, or even living a meaningful life. But the truth is, there’s no one-size-fits-all.

Drawing from both psychology and contemplative practice, Diana explores the myths of normalcy, why clinging to those ideas keeps us from fully embracing who we are and what we’re capable of, and how breaking free from the idea of “normal” can be the key to unlocking new possibilities.

Diana also offered a lovely meditation on breathing in and out our common humanity.

I hope you find both helpful.

Try to understand what causes you to feel fault, resolve it and move on. Inner criticism tears you down. Commit to skillful corrections. Take a big breath and very deliberately name to yourself three strengths or virtues you have and let them sink in.

Be Benevolent

Be Benevolent

Liking feels good, it encourages us to approach and engage the world. Know what benevolence feels like in your body, heart, and mind, and realize that it is natural and normal. Appreciate some of the benevolence that buoys you along. Most people are fair-minded, empathic, cooperative, compassionate, and kind: in a word, benevolent.
