Talk + Meditation: The Four Immeasurables for Staying Calm, Kind, and Compassionate
October 2, 2026

Guest teacher Michael Gayner explores the Buddhist teachings of the Four Immeasurables—equanimity, loving-kindness, compassion, and sympathetic joy—and shows how each can become a practical reference point for navigating difficult emotions, relationships, and everyday situations. He also explains the subtle “near enemies” that can masquerade as these qualities, and offers a simple STOP practice for recognizing when we’ve gotten pulled off course and finding our way back.

A gentle breath meditation for meeting your mind just as it is, letting thoughts come and go with kindness, and strengthening your ability to return to the present moment.

Michael Gayner was the Executive Director of Drala Mountain Center from 2012 to 2023, and has been practicing meditation since the mid-1980s. He has a Ph.D. in Education with a focus on holistic education, and on the intersection of teaching and spiritual practice. Michael is presently serving as the President of the Global Compassion Coalition, and has a coaching and consulting practice.

These teachings are offered freely, at no charge.

And if you like, you may wish to participate in the age-old tradition of generosity through making an offering yourself – called “dāna” – to support Rick and the Wednesday Meditations. Generosity itself is a beautiful practice that opens and gladdens the heart, relaxes the contraction of “self,” and ripples out into the world to touch many people – and perhaps, eventually, even oneself.
